Removable Braces

What do I do if...
a baby tooth is loose and/or the permanent tooth is coming through and the braces do not fit anymore?

...your child should not wear the appliance for a few days, then try it again after the baby tooth has fallen out. If the braces no longer fit correctly, please call us and arrange for an appointment.

the braces are too tight and hurt?

...do not where the braces anymore, and call us to make an appointment so we can readjust the braces as quickly as possible.

the plastic, or a wire element, of the braces has broken?

...if the braces do not hurt when wearing them, or you can feel that their form has changed significantly, you can still continue to wear them. However, if they are strongly bent or broken, please arrange for an appointment with us.

Fixed Appliances

What do I do if...
my teeth hurt after the fixed braces are fitted?

...slight discomfort - particularly when biting or chewing - is normal within the first 2 to 3 days. Avoid eating hard foods, and/or cut the food and eat it with a fork instead of biting it (e.g., bread). If the pain is stronger, you can take a pain reliever (such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol). If, however, the pain continues for longer than a week, you should arrange for an appointment with us.

the braces rub against the inside of my cheeks or lips?

...particularly just after the braces are fitted, the tissue of the mouth must also become accustomed to the “foreign body,- and it reacts by swelling.
During the first few days - and especially at night - you should use the wax that we gave you. You can also apply a healing salve, such as Camistad.
If the situation does not improve, please arrange for an appointment with us. The sore spots should then heal quickly.

  a bracket has fallen off?

...generally, it is not serious if a bracket has come off or loosened as long as it does not cause you discomfort. However, you should in any case notify us by phone so we can decide whether repair is needed before your next regular appointment.

an elastic band has fallen off one of the brackets?
...as long as the arch wire is still in place in the bracket and it is not stabbing the cheek, the so-called ligature can be replaced at your next regular appointment. Otherwise, please make an earlier appointment with us.

the arch wire is stabbing the cheek?
...cover the end of the wire with wax. If the wire is sticking out too far, you can, only in extreme emergencies, such as during your vacation, evenings or on weekends, use nail clippers to cut off the end of the arch wire. In any case, please call us to arrange for an appointment.

  a steel ligature has loosened?
...ligatures, made of either elastic bands or steel wire, are wrapped around the brackets. If a steel ligature loosens or otherwise causes discomfort, you can attempt to bend the wire back so that it no longer bothers you. If this doesn’t work, just cut the wire, with nail clippers for example, to remove it.

the end of the Wilson arch wire has slipped out of its tube?

...the arch wire is fastened to the incisors with four ligatures made of thinner wire. You can easily cut these thin wires off with nail clippers. The arch wire is then completely freed so you can simply pull it out of the other tube to remove it. Do not throw the arch wire away! Please call us to arrange for an appointment as soon as possible.

the Jasper Jumper (JJ) has loosened or broken?

...please call us to arrange for an appointment as soon as possible.

Lingual Orthodontics

The tips and procedures described above apply equally to the Lingual brackets, which are attached to the backs of the teeth. In other words, start by applying wax amply to the brackets that are causing discomfort to cover them, which should allow the mouth tissue and tongue to regenerate.

Please call us to arrange for an appointment as soon as possible.
